Buying a home is the major decision. The move itself — the practical logistics of establishing yourself in a new county — is a secondary but real task that deserves its own preparation. Here is a practical orientation for new residents arriving in Skagit County.
Utilities Setup
Electricity. Puget Sound Energy serves most of Skagit County. Contact them before your move-in date to transfer service — they can typically schedule same-day activation for accounts that are already established. Some rural areas are served by PUD No. 1 of Skagit County rather than PSE.
Natural gas. Cascade Natural Gas serves the incorporated communities in Skagit County. Propane is the alternative for rural properties without natural gas access.
Water and sewer. City of Mount Vernon, City of Burlington, City of Anacortes, and other municipalities provide water service within their boundaries. Rural properties are on private wells. Contact the relevant utility provider before or immediately after closing to transfer accounts.
Internet. Service quality varies significantly by location. Comcast/Xfinity provides cable internet service in most incorporated areas. Ziply Fiber has expanded availability in portions of the county. Rural areas have more limited options — verify actual available service at any specific rural address before assuming connectivity.
Garbage and recycling. Waste Management serves much of the county; Republic Services and other providers serve some areas. Contact Skagit County for current service area maps if you are outside city limits.
County and Municipal Services
Vehicle registration and driver’s license. Washington State requires you to update your driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency. Vehicle registration must also be transferred. The Washington Department of Licensing administers vehicle and vessel licensing; the Skagit County Auditor’s office serves as a local DOL subagent for registration transactions. The Department of Licensing has offices in Mount Vernon.
Property taxes. Skagit County property taxes are paid annually or semi-annually through the County Treasurer’s office. If you purchased with a mortgage, your lender likely escrows for taxes — confirm this arrangement and the payment schedule.
Voter registration. Update your voter registration through the Skagit County Auditor’s office or the Washington Secretary of State’s online portal. Washington State uses all-mail voting; once registered at your Skagit County address, ballots will arrive before each election.
Schools
Skagit County has multiple school districts that do not align neatly with city boundaries. Verify your specific address’s school district assignment rather than assuming it based on city name. The major districts include:
- Mount Vernon School District
- Burlington-Edison School District
- Anacortes School District
- Sedro Woolley School District
- La Conner School District
Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon serves the county’s community college needs, with additional satellite locations throughout the region.
Healthcare
Skagit Regional Health operates Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon. PeaceHealth United General Medical Center serves Sedro Woolley and the eastern county. A network of affiliated clinics serves the broader region.
Anacortes has its own Island Hospital, which serves the western communities and provides a convenient alternative for residents in that area.
Getting Around
Skagit Transit operates bus service throughout the county. Route coverage is reasonably comprehensive within incorporated areas; rural service is limited. The agency connects to Sound Transit and Whatcom Transportation Authority routes for regional connections.
Most errands in Skagit County require a car, particularly in rural areas. I-5 is the primary north-south corridor. Highway 20 connects the coast to the mountains. State Route 536 and other local routes serve the interior communities.
Community Resources
Skagit County Chamber of Commerce. Multiple chambers operate throughout the county — the Mount Vernon, Burlington, Anacortes, and La Conner chambers each maintain business directories and community resources.
Skagit County Libraries. The Skagit County library system operates branches in most communities. Library cards are free for county residents.
Parks and recreation. Skagit County parks, city parks in each community, and proximity to Washington State Parks and the North Cascades National Park give outdoor recreation options that are genuinely exceptional. The Skagit River watershed, Padilla Bay, Deception Pass State Park (accessible from Anacortes), and the Cascades foothills are all within easy reach.
Taking some time to locate and register with these services in the first few weeks of residence makes the practical transition meaningfully smoother.
